In the even semester of 2023/2024, for the period from February to June 2024, the Department of Urban and Regional Planning of Diponegoro University (UNDIP) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) held an International Academic Collaboration activities in the form of “Joint Lecture Rural Development: Case Study in Indonesia and Malaysia.” This event was attended by 12 students from the Rural Development LTPW6605 (UNDIP) class and 45 students from the Regional and Rural Planning SBEW 2443 (UTM) class, and it involved four lecturers from both universities.

This series of activities includes the International Joint Lecture and International Joint Student Seminar. The International Joint Lecture activity was carried out with material delivered by supporting lecturers from the Department of Regional and Urban Planning from UNDIP and UTM as follows:

  1. Rural Transformation by Dr. Holi Bina Wijaya (UNDIP) on March 29, 2024
  2. Bottom-up Planning Approach for Rural Development (Engagement and Empowerment) by Dr. Mohamad Fadhli (UTM) on April 26, 2024
  3. Livelihood Concept in Rural Development delivered by Prof. Dr. Iwan Rudiarto (UNDIP) on May 24, 2024
  4. Introduction to Disaster Business Continuity Planning (DBCP) by Dr Khairul Hisyam (UTM) on May 31, 2024

Lectures are carried out in an integrated manner and support the active role of students in the learning process. Each lecture session began with a briefing on the concept of each lecture material by the lecturer, followed by discussion and practice activities by forming student groups, where each group was a combination of students from Undip and UTM. In the student group, the two universities had the opportunity to discuss and cooperate in completing training assignments. In the final lecture session, students in each group presented the results of the assignments carried out together, and discussions were held. The lecturers then gave comments and evaluations on the material and the learning process in the session.

An International Joint Student Seminar was held on June 7, 2024, as a closing event of this joint lecture series. The activity was organized and managed by a committee of students from UNDIP and UTM. This event was open to the public and attended by students and lecturers from both universities, participants from other universities, local governments, and the general public, with more than 100 participants. The Seminar, “Rural Development: Case Study in Indonesia and Malaysia,” aims to encourage exchange and learning, as well as to share ideas, approaches, experiences, and knowledge from rural development case studies in both countries.

The seminar consisted of three topics, the first topic was titled “The Impact of Tourism on Rural Transformation in Muncar Moncer Tourism Village” which was presented by Athiya Iffaty from UNDIP, the second topic was titled “Rural Development Action Plan in KEJORA Region (Kampung Dato’ Haji Abdul Ghani Othman)” which was presented by Nurilyana and Yu Siang from UTM, and the third topic was titled “Rural Development Action Plan in KEJORA Region (Kampung Punggai)” which was presented by Fatin Sofea and Nur Sabrina.

The event was opened with a speech by Assoc Prof. TPr Dr. Siti Hajar bt Misnan as Director of the Urban and Regional Planning Program of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia then the event was closed with a closing statement by Prof. Dr. -Ing. Wiwandari Handayani as Head of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning of Diponegoro University, Prof. Dr. -Ing. Wiwandari Handayani.

This activity is expected to strengthen academic cooperation between UNDIP and UTM and provide great benefits for the development of urban and regional planning science, and learning experiences for lecturers and students, especially in rural development in Indonesia and Malaysia. This collaboration is in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 17, namely “Partnerships to Achieve Goals”, by strengthening global partnerships and encouraging synergies between institutions to achieve common goals. Such collaboration will pave the way for innovation and creative solutions for developing higher education learning activities, and rural development applications.

With the spirit of collaboration and innovation, the Department of Urban and Regional Planning UNDIP and UTM are committed to continuing to develop academic cooperation programs that positively impact students, lecturers, and learning systems. As a follow-up, this cooperation activity will be further developed to include research cooperation, learning other courses, as well as student guidance and testing at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral program levels.
