On Tuesday, March 5, 2024, the Department of Urban and Regional Planning successfully held International Lecture Series #01, it was held online via Zoom meeting (synchronously) and hybrid (asynchronously). The discussion is about “Natural Disaster, Risk Reduction and Resilience Building,” related to Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and Sustainable Development Goal 13 (Climate Action). On this occasion, the Vice Dean II of the Faculty of Engineering at Diponegoro University, Dr. Ir. Abdul Syakur, ST, MT, IPU, delivered the opening remarks. In his remarks, he mentioned that the International Lecture Series should continue and inspire future academics, contributing to the development of science in Indonesia.
Prof. Dr. Boris Braun from the Institute of Geography at the University of Cologne, Germany, regarding “Social and Economic Impact of Disasters in Germany.” Meanwhile, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wiwandari Handayani from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Diponegoro University explained about”Building Climate Change Adaptation and Resilience: An Indonesian Context.” The moderator was Konstantin Gisevius, M.Sc., from the Institute of Geography at the University of Cologne, Germany.
An important note in the discussion was that Indonesia and Germany have different geographies, technologies, and societies in facing disasters. Disaster management does not solely depend on technology but also on high preparedness and public participation in disaster knowledge. The government’s role is crucial in building infrastructure to plan disaster warning systems. The webinar activity went well, and there were around 150 participants attending synchronously (via Zoom) and asynchronously in the Theater Room of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, not only students and lecture at Diponegoro University but also from other university both in Indonesia and abroad, representatives of government, NGOs, and alumni of Diponegoro University
