Cities essentially function to accommodate human needs to live, to work, and to play. This function must be supported by various components such as road networks and utilities to ensure optimal operation. Over time, the challenges cities face have become increasingly complex, particularly in creating livable and sustainable spaces amid rapid urbanization. Therefore, appropiate planning and policies are needed to address these challenges.

As an Honorary Professor in the field of livable and sustainable cities from Diponegoro University, Prof. (H.C.) Ir. Bambang Susantono, M.C.P., M.S.C.E., Ph.D., offers solutions and perspectives in his book titled “Membangun Kota Masa Depan Layak Huni dan Berkelanjutan”. The book was launched on Saturday, September 28, 2024, during the event “Road to Lingkar Plano HMTP UNDIP 2024,” which is part of the 32nd Dies Natalis celebration of DURP Undip.

In this event, Prof. Bambang explained that when designing a master plan, cities should not only aim to be livable but also loveable—cities that are beloved by all their inhabitants. He emphasized the importance of cities being embraced by their residents, where they feel ownership and involvement in its development, aligned with the principles of the SDGs. As Prof. Bambang stated in the discussion session, “Building a city means building its people.” The book also encompasses the 5D concept in building a city into a smart city: Design, Density, Diversity, Digitalization, and Decarbonization.

Prof. Bambang also expressed his hope for Indonesian cities to transform into smart, green, and accessible cities that meet the needs of all citizens. This vision aligns with SDG 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities. With this book, it is hoped that stakeholders, urban planners, and academics will leverage the insights and solutions presented to create more livable and sustainable cities. The book is expected to become an essential reference in efforts to create better urban environments for future generations.
