On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, the Department of Urban dan Regional Planning successfully held International Lecture Series #03. It was held online via synchronously (Zoom meeting) and asynchronously (YouTube). The discussion is “Sustainable Housing Policy,” which is related to Sustainable Development Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Sustainable Development Goal 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities). On this occasion, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Wiwandari Handayani, as Head of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Diponegoro University, gave opening remarks. In her remarks, she mentioned that this ILS topic of settlements and housing is an important part of urban and regional planning. The ILS activities of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning can be viewed on YouTube, making it accessible to anyone interested in topics related to urban and regional planning. We hope this platform will benefit all parties interested in studying urban and regional planning.

Landung Esariti, ST, MPS, from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Diponegoro University, as the moderator, and guided the discussion with two presenters. The first material was delivered by Chantalle Elisabeth Rietdijk, Ph.D., from the Program on Smart Sustainable Development and Management, National Taipei University, Taiwan, on “The Development of Social Rental Housing in the Greater Taipei Region.” Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Sunarti from the Department of Urban and Regional Planning at Diponegoro University explained about “Housing Development Patterns Around Industrial Areas (Case Study: Housing around Kendal Industrial Park, Kendal Regency).”

An important note in the discussion was that the increase in urban population impacts the demand for residential land, with the need for housing rising, particularly in urban and industrial areas. There is a need for housing development, both in the form of apartments or small houses, not only targeted at low-income communities (MBR) but also the general public in need. Collaboration between the government and the private sector is essential in addressing housing development issues, as this collaboration will create decent, affordable, and sustainable housing. The webinar activity went well and there were 75 participants attending synchronously (Zoom meeting), not only students and lecturers at Diponegoro University but also academics from other universities both in Indonesia and abroad, representatives of government agencies, NGOs and alumni of Diponegoro University.
